Ushering in the new semester at iChange

On the 28th of August, Shift Events hosted a dinner and drinks, to welcome Industrial Ecology students, new and old alike, to a new semester.

The previous year had been a tough period for students to get together to get to know one another, hang out and expand their social circles in IE. At the dinner and drinks, new students met their classmates for the first time, while existing students reconnected and shared their summer experiences.

At the community space iChange, a sustainable movement aiming to reduce waste in the food system, students were treated to a barbeque full of vegan delights, all sourced from iChange’s Community Fridge containing rescued food from supermarkets around the area.

With scrumptious food and drinks, the participants had a merry and memorable night in the company of their peers!

IE Students Meet IE Researchers – Edition 2!

On Friday 24th of September, the Career Committee brought Industrial Ecology students closer to the exciting research done in the sphere of IE with invited speakers from the Institute of Environment. This was the first hybrid event organised by the Career Committee, and there was an incredible turnout, both online and offline.

The event gave the students the opportunity to hear and interact with two presenters:

Mike Slootweg – IE alumnus, PhD researcher at the MultiGreen project in the IE department of CML. His research involves building stock models to evaluate the impact and realization of green roofs in cities.

Glenn Aguilar Hernandez – Postdoc researcher at the IE department of CML. Currently, his research focuses on developing an assessment of the COVID-19 impacts on global supply chains, and on the market analysis, trade and prices of critical raw materials for the EU.

Despite the hybrid format, students engaged candid and insightful conversation with the presenters. The presenters shared their journeys in the field of Industrial Ecology, the ups and downs of their research, even their frustrations in their interactions with people outside their field. Even the 30 minutes for each speaker was not enough to answer the questions posed by our inquisitive students!

The 2nd Edition of IE Students Meet Researchers was a great success, and the Career Committee looks forward to seeing you at the next session!

Kicking off IE with Shift – Intro Day 2021

The morning of 6th September marks the start of a bold step for over a hundred new faces as they walk into the Naturalis Museum in Leiden, to join the Industrial Ecology Programme at Leiden Unviersity and Delft University of Technology.

Our very own Chairman Johanna presenting the committee structure of Shift to the new students.

Shift was on location to welcome these students as they embark on their Master’s: breaking the ice between classmates-to-be with our introduction session to the study association and rounds of Mentimeter and Kahoot quizzes. The fastest most knowledgable teams won Shift merchandise!

After the official introduction event by the University, was the time for the Introduction Scavenger Hunt! Participants – split into small teams – walked, dashed and photographed their way across Leiden city with their cute succulent mascots. The creativity was flowing throughout the event – Shift received a slew of cool, funny, sometimes quirky submissions of the teams completing their tasks in quick succession.

At the end of the day, participants, organisers, mentors alike wound down at the Huigpark in Leiden, to draw the day to a satisfying close.

Cleaning Delft once piece at a time

To celebrate Word Cleanup Day on 18th September 2021, Shift organised a cleanup event at Delft Campus station.

Equipped with plastic reachers and rubbish bags in tow, our determined pick-up force made our way across Delft Campus area. We cleared rubbish pieces, big and small, from the pathways, roadsides and grass patches on our walk.

What an experience! The team saw all forms of rubbish: paper, plastic, metal cans. Can you guess what is the most common form of rubbish that we picked up?

After a long day in the sun, the team finally took stock of our work – 5 bags of trash cleared from the streets of Delft Campus!

End of Year Beach Borrel

The beach borrel held on 2 July 2021, at Scheveningen beach, brought 2 generations of IE students together a fun and relaxing time offline after a year of intensive on-screen schooling.

It was a good chance to meet and catchup with classmates and friends that we might have not met throughout the restrictions, and even see some new faces. We even had Stefano and Paula share the celebrations with us!

It was nice to see everyone chill together and enjoy the sun and waves, before we all head off to enjoy our summer holidays!

IE Thesis Pitch

The IE Thesis Pitch was organised by the IE Career Committee on June 9th for students looking to embark on their thesis projects. Five IE students currently working on their thesis shared their experiences: developing their ideas from the initial spark, choosing their advisors, working with companies and even writing their papers for dual-masters.

The pitch started off with a quick round of introductions by the five students, each presenting the gist of their current thesis topics, their approaches to writing and also some tips for the attendees. The session then split into breakout rooms, where attendees had the chance to pose their burning questions and clarify their doubts about the thesis writing process with the five thesis-writing students. The thesis-writing students offered many pearls of advice and encouragement. It was very heartening to see the flow of conversations in the breakout room!

At the end, to thank the five students for their generosity and time for sharing with our participants, Shift planted 10 trees on behalf of them!

Food for Thought series

This year, Shift is proud to be part of the organising team for “Food for Thought”, an event that encourages participants to make more conscious decisions about food through both online and offline activities on food circularity and action. The series was organised by the LDE Center for Sustainability Students, together with 7 associations from Leiden, Delft, The Hague and Rotterdam.

On 1st June 2021, Shift hosted Coen Hubers for an online lecture, “To Meat or Not to Meat?“, as part of the week-long Food for Thought series.

In his exciting lecture, Coen Hubers, founder and coordinator of the AgriFood Hub at LDE Centre for Sustainability, answers important questions about the current transition in our system. Questions regarding the impacts of meat substitutes, about the roles animals play in the food system’s supply chain, and questions about how regenerative farming, mimicking healthy natural ecosystems, can benefit the environment.

On June 2, Shift got together with the team from Plastic Spotter Leiden to clean-up the streets of Leiden!
